LA Arts District Engagement Style Shoot - Luke + Emma - Downtown Los Angeles, California

Doing a photoshoot in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District can be tricky because it’s a popular place, but going at sunrise may mean you have the streets all to yourself! The LA Arts District is a great place for an engagement shoot or a couples shoot! I loved working with Luke and Emma, exploring the old brick buildings of DTLA’s Art District together. Full disclosure - these two aren’t engaged, but doing this shoot it’s clear that this location would be AMAZING for an urban engagement shoot.

what to do in Downtown LA

The things I love most about visiting the arts district are the old brick industrial buildings (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is partially filmed here - you might spot Paddy’s Pub in the background!), amazing murals, Blue Bottle Coffee Shop - where the three of us grabbed a cup of coffee towards the end of our shoot, Pizzanista, and the arts district pop up experiences!

WHERE TO STAY IN and around LA

Here are a few of my favorites from our Downtown LA Arts District Engagement Shoot:

The history of the DTLA Arts District

There is SO MUCH history here - maybe it’s the nerd in me, but I am just amazed at the many lives the Arts District has lived. The LA Arts’ District doesn’t have an official boundary, but it’s considered to be roughly marked by Alameda Street, The LA River, the 101 Freeway, and the 10 Freeway. This spot, in the heart of the city, has been loved for centuries - in fact, it was basically the spot Los Angeles was founded, September 4th 1781 according to the arts district official website. The area has been involved in different types of industry ever since; vineyards sprawled through the area in the 1800’s, followed by the railroad industry, and then industrial manufacturers through the 1920’s. In the 90’s the arts district went through a period of revitalization, and abandoned warehouses were transformed into artists’ lofts. The area was officially named “The Arts District” in the 1990’s, a mission led by activist and “unofficial mayor of downtown,” Joel Bloom.
